How much does eBay take from a sale?
For most categories, eBay takes 13.6% of the total amount of the sale, plus $0.40 per order. The "total amount" is everything the buyer pays: the item price, the shipping you charge, handling and the sales tax eBay collects. That last part surprises a lot of sellers, since eBay collects the tax and passes it to the state, but still charges its percentage on it.
The per-order fee drops to $0.30 when the order total is $10 or less. On a sale over $7,500, the part above $7,500 is charged at 2.35% instead of 13.6%.

On small orders the fixed per-order fee does the damage. On an $8 order it adds almost 4 points to your fee rate. It's one reason many sellers bundle cheap items or set a minimum price.
Worked example: a $50 item with $8 shipping and sales tax
- Order total: $50 + $8 shipping + $4.06 sales tax (7% in this example) = $62.06
- Final value fee: 13.6% × $62.06 = $8.44
- Per-order fee: $0.40
- Total eBay fees: $8.84

Does eBay charge fees on shipping and sales tax?
Yes, on both. The final value fee is calculated on the full amount the buyer pays, so the shipping you charge and the sales tax are included. Two practical effects:
- Free shipping doesn't avoid the fee. If you roll shipping into the item price, the fee is the same, because the total is the same.
- Overcharging for shipping costs you. Every extra dollar of shipping pays 13.6% to eBay. Use calculated shipping or accurate flat rates.

Insertion fees
Your first 250 listings each month are free. After that, eBay charges $0.35 per listing, per category. Most part-time sellers never pay insertion fees.
Promoted listings
Promoted Listings are eBay's ads. You choose an ad rate, a percentage of the sale, and you only pay it if the buyer clicked your ad and bought within the attribution window. A 5% ad rate on top of the standard fees takes your total to roughly 18.6% plus $0.40, so price with it in mind.
International fee
If the buyer's address is outside the US, eBay adds 1.65% of the order total.
Seller performance surcharges
If your account falls to below standard, eBay adds 6% to your final value fees (7% after four months in a row). A very high rate of "item not as described" returns adds 5%. Ship on time and describe items carefully and these never apply.
eBay Store subscribers get lower final value fees in many categories, but pay a monthly subscription. It only pays off once you sell enough each month to cover it. Compare the store fee table on eBay with your real monthly sales before you subscribe.

For eBay, Depop and Mercari we assume the buyer pays $8.00 shipping and your label costs the same, since those platforms charge fees on shipping. On Poshmark and Vinted the buyer pays for the label separately. Vinted's fee is paid by the buyer, so the seller keeps the full price. The highest amount for each price is in bold.
eBay isn't the cheapest platform on fees, but it has the biggest general audience in the US and works for almost every category, not just fashion. Many resellers list on eBay and cross-list on one or two fashion apps.

- Charge accurate shipping. Every dollar of shipping is also charged 13.6%.
- Bundle low-priced items. Three $5 items in one $15 listing pay one per-order fee, not three.
- Keep your seller level up. The below standard surcharge adds 6% to every fee.
- Promote only what needs it. Start with a low ad rate on slow movers instead of promoting everything.
